UMM AL QUWAIN // A restaurant has been fined and shut down for two days after a photo of a cat nibbling from the shawarma skewer went viral on social media.
Municipality health inspectors investigated the incident and were told by restaurant workers that the cat sneaked in after they left a door open to go to the mosque for Maghrib prayers.
The municipality urged owners of food establishments to make sure their staff were wearing proper clothing and gloves while handling food, that the venue is always clean and that all food is safe to eat.
Al Ittihad, the sister newspaper of The National, said that the municipality's public health department is currently carrying out food inspections throughout the emirate.
