DUBAI // A passport control officer and his colleague helped more than 1,000 illegal residents leave the country without being arrested, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Emiratis K A, 31, and M S, 30, were charged with forging documents in the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (DNRD) system to clear fines for people who had overstayed their visas.

The incidents took place between 2008 and December 2012. Both men are facing charges of forgery and using forged documents.

Records show K A and M S worked at Dubai International Airport’s passport control and when one was not present the other would carry out the forgeries.

Prosecutors said that the two helped pay off the fees of 1,119 visitors, most of whom were Asians and Pakistanis.

The next hearing will be on March 8.
