Parts of Reem Island in Abu Dhabi have been plunged into darkness after a power failure on Thursday evening.
The electricity supply was wiped out at a number of residential buildings in the area, while traffic lights have also shutdown due to the outage.
Residents reported a blackout at Marina Square, Sun Tower and Marina Bay Towers.
The lights were also out at Boutik Mall.
Scores of tenants left in the dark took to social media to tell of the electricity failure.
One onlooker said the incident was causing significant disruption in the area.
They said police were at the scene shortly after 8pm.
"Half of Reem Island has no electricity. Even the traffic lights have been affected. I have seen five police cars in the area."
The cause of the electricity failure is not yet known.
Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, the emirate's electricity and water supplier, sent a text alert to customers regarding the outage.
The authority said an emergency crew was working to restore power to affected properties.
ADDC said it regretted to inform customers that the electricity supply was down due to an "electric outage incident".
"We are currently working with an emergency crew to restore the power," said the message.
The utility company sent an update to customers at Sun Tower on the island shortly after 9.30pm, stating that it 'hoped" power had been restored and urged people to contact them if they were still experiencing problems.
Residents said that power was starting to be restored to some affected buildings shortly before 10pm.
Real estate company Provis, which manages some of the affected properties, also sent out a message to tenants reiterating that efforts were being made to resolve the issue.
"There has been a sudden power failure affecting a number of buildings in Reem Island. An ADDC team is currently working to restore the power," said the company in the notice.
"The inconvenience caused is genuinely regretted and thank you for your patience and understanding."
