Dedicated bus and taxi lanes in Sharjah are now being monitored by cameras to catch drivers misusing them.
Designed and developed by the traffic department, the first camera was installed on one of the emirate's main roads on Thursday.
Maj Gen Saif Al Shamsi, Sharjah Police Chief, said the new camera in Al Majaz, near Khalid Lake, would help ease congestion and stop motorists incorrectly using the bus and taxi lane - allowing public transport to run
more smoothly.
Drivers caught flout the law, that bans private car drivers from using the dedicated lane, face a fine of Dh400.
Maj Gen Al Shamsi said the emirate's roads and transport authority were reviewing plans to install the cameras across Sharjah.
Abusing the bus and taxi lane carries a fine of Dh600 in Dubai. The rule was introduced in 2015 and smart cameras were installed to catch offenders.
