Despite the global economic downturn, Dubai motorists forked out a total of Dh12 million for some of the emirate's most sought-after number plates. About 120 bidders packed the Roads & Transport Authority's (RTA) 68th Distinguished Number Plate Auction at the Theatre Hall in its head office. The auction attracted more bidders than on previous occasions, despite the lingering recession and the fact that many people are out of the country on holiday, said Ahmed Bahrozyan, the chief executive of the RTA.
Among the 92 licence plates that went under the hammer were such low numbers as G58, H91, J333 and I786. "These numbers were instrumental in escalating the competition among bidders," said Mr Bahrozyan. All the proceeds go to the RTA. The RTA launched a media campaign before the auction, held this month, to publicise the event. The world's most expensive number plate, 1, which went under the hammer for Dh52.2m in Abu Dhabi in 2008, was bought by Saeed Abdul Ghafour Khouri, a businessman.
