Two men who were sentenced to life in prison by Dubai Criminal Court for possessing more than 400 kilograms of amphetamines to sell must see out their jail terms.
In court, a Syrian lorry driver, 33, denied planning to sell the drugs and said he was asked to deliver the amphetamines to Saudi Arabia in return for money.
He said his co-accused was innocent of the charges and had no knowledge of the drugs in the lorry.
"I'm not guilty, I'm not connected to the drugs in any way," said the 40-year-old second defendant.
Police were tipped-off about the driver and, after surveying them, arrested the two accused on September 23 last year.
"We found the drugging pills hidden in the driver's lorry in a very careful way," said a police lieutenant, 31.
The police lieutenant said the men initially refused to unlock the doors of the lorry when the arresting officers stopped them in Ras Al Khor.
"We had to smash the windows to gain access and apprehend them," he said.
Police found 412 kgs of the drugging tablets.
The pair were convicted and sentenced to life in prison but sought reduced sentences at Dubai Court of Appeal.
The court rejected their plea and upheld the sentence. They will be deported after serving their terms.
Abdul Jabar Qahraman was meeting supporters in his campaign office in the southern Afghan province of Helmand when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded on Wednesday.
The blast in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah killed the Afghan election candidate and at least another three people, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak told reporters. Another three were wounded, while three suspects were detained, he said.
The Taliban – which controls much of Helmand and has vowed to disrupt the October 20 parliamentary elections – claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr Qahraman was at least the 10th candidate killed so far during the campaign season, and the second from Lashkar Gah this month. Another candidate, Saleh Mohammad Asikzai, was among eight people killed in a suicide attack last week. Most of the slain candidates were murdered in targeted assassinations, including Avtar Singh Khalsa, the first Afghan Sikh to run for the lower house of the parliament.
The same week the Taliban warned candidates to withdraw from the elections. On Wednesday the group issued fresh warnings, calling on educational workers to stop schools from being used as polling centres.

Children who witnessed blood bath want to help others
Aged just 11, Khulood Al Najjar’s daughter, Nora, bravely attempted to fight off Philip Spence. Her finger was injured when she put her hand in between the claw hammer and her mother’s head.
As a vital witness, she was forced to relive the ordeal by police who needed to identify the attacker and ensure he was found guilty.
Now aged 16, Nora has decided she wants to dedicate her career to helping other victims of crime.
“It was very horrible for her. She saw her mum, dying, just next to her eyes. But now she just wants to go forward,” said Khulood, speaking about how her eldest daughter was dealing with the trauma of the incident five years ago. “She is saying, 'mama, I want to be a lawyer, I want to help people achieve justice'.”
Khulood’s youngest daughter, Fatima, was seven at the time of the attack and attempted to help paramedics responding to the incident.
“Now she wants to be a maxillofacial doctor,” Khulood said. “She said to me ‘it is because a maxillofacial doctor returned your face, mama’. Now she wants to help people see themselves in the mirror again.”
Khulood’s son, Saeed, was nine in 2014 and slept through the attack. While he did not witness the trauma, this made it more difficult for him to understand what had happened. He has ambitions to become an engineer.
