DUBAI // A mathematics teacher at a private school on Tuesday confessed in court to molesting one of his pupils.
Filipino R M, 29, pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault.
Prosecutors said he told the boy, aged 13, to lock the door of his classroom before asking him to massage his head and back.
The pupil said it was not the first time his maths teacher had asked him for a massage, but he had always refused. However, about 1.30pm on April 16, he reluctantly accepted.
“While massaging him he started talking about how much he will miss me in the summer break,” the boy said.
The teacher then hugged the boy and started kissing him on his cheeks.
When he attempted to kiss the child on the lips, the boy tried to stop him. But the teacher did not stop and he touched the boy inappropriately for about 20 minutes until pupils started to gather at the classroom.
At that point, “he told me to leave”, the boy said.
It was not clear how the incident was reported to police. But during police and prosecution investigations, R M confessed to the charge against him.
A verdict is expected on July 7.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.
