DUBAI // A 30-year-old man who was arrested for a drugs offence called on his mother and sisters, who helped him assault police officers.

H W, an unemployed Iranian, claimed that he was attacked by the officers but was convicted by Dubai Criminal Court of using hashish and resisting arrest. He was sentenced to three years in jail and was fined Dh20,000.

He admitted taking drugs when he appeared in court in October but denied resisting arrest and kicking officers on May 31.

Police officer S Z said in court records that he arrested H W after a tip-off.

“We waited for him near his house in Al Satwa. He arrived in a car and, as he stepped out, we approached him and identified ourselves, after which he resisted arrest by pushing us to the floor and kicking us,” the officer said.

The officer said H W called out for his mother and family. “His mother and sisters came and assaulted me as well as the arresting officers and also insulted them. The woman pulled my hair,” S A said.

H W will be deported after serving his jail term.
