DUBAI // A man who used his car as an unlicensed taxi offered a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) inspector a Dh400 bribe, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On August 4 this year O B, 40, from Yemen, said he was on duty inspecting taxis and private cars in the Al Nahda 1 area about 7pm when he saw the Indian defendant N K, 31, with three African men in his Nissan Sunny.

“When I saw his car stopping I noticed that one of the African men was paying him money so I approached him and asked about his relation to the men in the car with him,” said the inspector.

He said the defendant could not tell him the names of the men.

The passengers told him they had been picked up by the driver close to Zulekha Hospital, for a lift to their destination in exchange for Dh20.

“So I issued him a ticket and then he started telling me that he could be fired from his job and offered to give me all the cash he had on him if I cancelled the ticket.

“I didn’t pay him much attention but then he placed the Dh400 on the seat next to his, so I called a police patrol that was close by,” the inspector said.

N K denied offering the bribe in court on Wednesday and said he was only paying part of the fine issued to him.

A verdict is expected on October 15.
