DUBAI // A man threatened to kill his ex-wife after she refused to reconsider their relationship, a court heard on Tuesday.

Syrian S Y, 29, repeatedly tried to meet and call his ex-wife in order to woo her back, prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court.

The victim, H A, also Syrian, said that as she left work at Al Zahra Hospital, on June 9, the defendant was waiting for her.

“He asked that we meet and asked for a date and time for this meeting, but I refused. He then started insulting and threatening me.”

The defendant was verbally abusive towards his ex-wife, describing her as a dirty woman who lacked honour, before allegedly threatening: “If you dont return to me, I will chase you and will kill you.”

Documents presented in court revelaed several of the insulting text messages sent from S Y to his ex-wife.

S Y was not present in court to enter a plea.

A verdict is expected on October 28.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.

  • In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
  • Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
  • Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.
