DUBAI // A man accused of threatening to kill his ex-wife and her entire family if she did not let him into her apartment denied the accusations on Wednesday.

The jobless 30-year-old, from Azerbaijan, told Dubai Criminal Court that he was visiting his ex-wife to talk to her about their problems.

“She is my ex-wife and she filed four cases against me. I went there to talk to her but I did not threaten her, and besides, she dropped charges against me in this case,” said the defendant who was not able to present a document to back his claim that charges had been dropped.

The 28-year-old Moldovan ex-wife told prosecutors that at about 3.30pm on January 24, the suspect knocked on her door several times and she did not open it for him.

“He then started kicking the door before he told me he would kill me and kill my family if I didn’t let him in,” said the woman.

The ex-wife’s friend, who was with her in the apartment at the time of the incident, told investigators of the threats she heard. “He told her he will find her wherever she went and will kill her and her family,” said the Uzbek witness.

Prosecutors said that camera footage from the woman’s building in Al Barsha showed the defendant kicking her door violently.

She called police and reported the incident.

In court on Wednesday, he denied a charge of issuing threats to kill.

A verdict is expected on August 31.
