DUBAI // A 40-year-old jobless man, charged with attempting to kill his own son, failed to attend his court hearing in Dubai on Sunday.
Emirati M A, is charged with the attempted murder of his 16-year-old son S M A by stabbing him in the chest.
He is also charged with consuming alcohol without a license.
Prosecutors said on April 14 last year, the defendant stabbed his son on the left side of his chest aiming to end his life, however his son, S M A, was rescued after he managed to escape and police were contacted.
A police patrol and an ambulance went to the house in the Al Rashidiya area where the victim was taken to Rashid Hospital. He needed surgery to save his life.
“When I arrived to the house, I first saw blood on the floor,” said Emirati policeman M Y, 24, adding he found the father there and when he asked him about the incident he confessed that he stabbed his son.
He said he smelled alcohol on the defendant’s breath.
During questioning, M A confessed he stabbed his son once, but he did not elaborate on the reasons why. He also said he had consumed 10 cans of beer that day.
The criminal lab report stated the stab could have been fatal if it was not for rescuer’s quick response and the surgical intervention.
The Dubai Criminal Court will issue a verdict on March 22.
