Man jailed over video blackmail threat

The married owner of a shipping company has been jailed for nine months after attempting to blackmail a woman into having sex with him.

Dubai Criminal Court heard how the 49-year-old Jordanian victim met the defendant two years ago through his business.

After becoming friends, the woman asked to lease an empty apartment belonging to the man for a few days.

But during a meal with her son, the defendant propositioned her. And when she refused he threatened to post videos he had made of her in secret online.

“He touched me while we were having dinner and he then told me he wanted to have sex,” the woman told the court.

“I refused. It was then that he told me about the recordings he’d made using cameras at his place.”

Prosecutors revealed that the victim rang the defendant’s wife to tell her of her husband’s threats.

But the Jordanian man, 47, responded by again threatening to publish the videos if she did not retract her accusation.

“He said he would defame me using the video if I didn’t call his wife and retract what I told her,” the woman said.

The defendant was found guilt of sexual assault, making secret recordings and blackmail. He was ordered to be deported after completing his sentence.

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
