Man jailed for stabbing colleague to death at Dubai construction site

DUBAI // A Bangladeshi driver who fatally stabbed a colleague after an argument was jailed for five years on Sunday.

The two men had a work-related dispute at a building site in Al Rashidiya and the victim assaulted the killer, 38, with a plank on November 22 last year, said a colleague.

Others at the site broke up their fight and reported them to a supervisor. By the time the supervisor arrived, the driver had taken a knife from a kitchen and stabbed the victim at about 7am after chasing him around the place.

The driver told police that the victim had assaulted him and he was only defending himself.

The victim was rushed to hospital but he died the next day.

The killer, whom witnesses said had fled after stabbing his colleague, was arrested on November 23.

He denied charges of physical assault and causing death when he appeared before the Dubai Criminal Court last month.

The court found the driver guilty on Sunday and he will be deported after serving his term.

It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.

The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.

The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.
