DUBAI // An Indian man who returned to his home country after his UAE work visa was revoked has killed himself in Mumbai.
After returning to India from Dubai at 5am on Sunday, Manuel Pereira, 33, was supposed to take a connecting flight from Mumbai to his home town in Goa. Instead, he walked out of the airport and hanged himself at a nearby bridge using a nylon rope.
"We were told he was upset because his visa got cancelled in Dubai. He went there to find work," said Uttam Kolekar, a police inspector at Sahar Airport.
His body was found at 7am by passersby who alerted police.
A passport found in his pocket helped police to establish his identity. No suicide note was found.
About 100 Indian expatriates committed suicide in the UAE last year, according to figures released by Indian consular officials in the UAE. The Indian authorities say the number has come down. In 2010, in Dubai and the Northern Emirates alone, about 110 Indians killed themselves, while about 113 did so in 2009.
