DUBAI // A jobless Emirati caught with more than 20,000 tramadol pills has told a court that they were all for his personal use.

The man, 38, was found with 22,329 tablets and is charged with possessing drugs to sell and using drugs. He confessed to the latter.

His countryman, 28, was charged with possessing 1,113 tramadol pills to sell and with using the drug. He also denied any intent to sell but admitted taking the drugs.

On May 21 last year, the pair were arrested after a tip-off to police. The drugs were found in their homes in Bur Dubai.

“We found some of the drugs hidden in the first defendant’s closet and during investigations, we knew he was assigned by an unidentified man to take the drugs to Ras Al Khaimah,” a police officer, 40 testified.

He said the second man was arrested on the same day after he was lured to meet the first, who had already been apprehended by police.

“He willingly handed us a bag containing 1,113 tramadol tablets and said that he was told to sell the drugs,” the officer said.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 5.
