DUBAI // A man was caught at Dubai International Airport with six pieces of cake containing marijuana and eight poppy seeds, a court has heard.

Dubai Criminal Court was told the 23-year-old Iranian was arrested after arriving on a visit visa on March 31.

Customs inspectors found six pieces of dark cake in his possession and, when they searched his luggage, they found eight poppy seeds. Prosecutors said the cakes contained 314 grammes of marijuana and that the seeds could be planted.

“The cakes and the seeds were gifts to friends of mine here. I didn’t know the cakes had marijuana in them,” the suspect said in court.

His mother was removed from the courtroom when she was heard telling her son what to say to judges from her seat.

He denied charges of smuggling and possessing drugs.

A verdict is expected on October 9.
