DUBAI // A maid who left a six-month-old baby alone when she ran away from her employer was jailed for a year yesterday.
W N, 24, from Indonesia, was found guilty of endangering the child’s life but cleared of stealing Dh17,000 from her boss by the Criminal Court.
The baby’s parents left her with the maid on April 3 this year and went to work. The mother, Egyptian A A, 29, realised she had left an envelope containing Dh17,000 on her dresser and tried to call the maid.
When she did not answer, the mother asked her husband A M, 31, a financial manager, to check on them.
He went back to their apartment and found his baby crying, lying face down on the floor with her hat covering her face.
He picked up the infant and called his wife, who rushed home and found the envelope was missing. She suspected the maid had stolen the money but her husband disagreed.
“When I informed my husband he said there was no way that she would have taken the money because she was such a polite and religious woman,” the wife said.
The building’s security guard said he saw the maid rushing out of the apartment but he was busy and did not talk to her.
The maid denied charges of theft and deliberately endangering the life of a child, and was acquitted of the former.
She will be deported after her jail term.

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.

The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
