DUBAI// A maid tried to steal bedsheets, spoons, knives, socks, food and other household items from her employer’s home.

The 46-year-old Filipina confessed in Dubai Criminal Court to a charge of attempted theft.

She had been working for her Emirati sponsor for eight years before she tried to steal the items from their home in Bur Dubai in November last year.

“After eight years with us it was agreed that she move to the sponsorship of my wife’s beauty salon and to the salon’s accommodation, but two months later she came back to take care of our children because our nanny had gone on her annual leave,” said the maid’s 39-year-old employer. He said that when the woman returned to the villa, his wife began to notice many things were missing and later found two boxes hidden in the maid’s room.

“When my wife opened the boxes she found bedsheets, kitchen utensils, children’s clothes, lamp bulbs, children’s toys, shoes, food, socks, glue sticks, batteries, make-up, an iron, even a laundry basket and much more, ” the husband said.

“While she was at home, she would come to our room with a big plastic bag and empty it in a box. I didn’t see what it contained but I found it very strange, she kept doing the same for a while until the sponsor came to our room and found that the boxes contained stolen items from the house,” said an Indonesian maid, 38, who shared a room with the defendant.

The maid did not give a reason for stealing the items.

“I just want to go home,” she told judges.

A verdict is due on March 29.
