Nearly 900 people living in Ras Al Khaimah have received Dh3.5 million in humanitarian aid during the first six months of this year, according to the charity Dar Al Ber.
Officials said the money was provided to help cover medical expenses, tuition fees and to pay off other outstanding bills.
Ali Al Shahi, manager of the society’s branch in RAK, said the organisation would continue to work to assist low-income families in the emirates.
“Some 200 families living in RAK have benefited from the Zayed Caravan charity initiative which was organised in association with a number of RAK schools and the emirates transport branch," Mr Al Shahi said. "The aid was provided by a number of philanthropists”.
The Dar Al Ber Society was established in Dubai in 1978 and was one of the first of its kind in the UAE. Over the years its initiatives have helped thousands of families in need with their household bills, including food, electricity and rent.

Money date nights: Talking about money should be a healthy, ongoing conversation and couples should not wait for something to go wrong. They should set time aside every month to talk about future financial decisions and see the progress they’ve made together towards accomplishing their goals.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
