DUBAI // A Serbian man who assaulted a marketing manager who had tried to break up a fight has been given a three-month jail term.

The defendant is believed to have fled the country and was sentenced in his absence on Wednesday.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that the victim, 24, a Palestinian, was leaving a nightclub in 2013 when he saw a group of men fighting.

“I went over and tried to stop them and when I saw that my efforts were not paying off, I just walked away,” said victim.

As he left, he said the defendant followed him, threw him to the ground and broke his leg by sitting on it.

A policeman said he was sent to the nightclub to investigate the fight.

“I met the victim, and he told me he was taken to a room inside and beaten up by a number of men,” said 43-year-old officer.

In court last month, the Serbian was not present to face charges of physical assault and causing a permanent disability.

Why the case took three years to reach trial was not disclosed.
