Italian Grand Prix gives police a look at security

Abu Dhabi // A delegation from the Abu Dhabi police completed a "very successful trip" to the Italian Grand Prix in Milan, where they observed security measures in preparation for Abu Dhabi's Formula One race later this year. While F1 often provides its own security during races, the Abu Dhabi police will be in charge of the overall operation on Yas Island. The event is expected to draw up to 60,000 fans daily from October 30 to November 1.

"It was a very successful trip that will help us in securing this mega event," said Maj Gen Obaid al Kitbi, deputy commander in chief of the Abu Dhabi Police. The Abu Dhabi delegation met Bernie Ecclestone, the president and chief executive of Formula One Management, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior. "Abu Dhabi will see a large number of dignitaries, athletes, fans and the public. We are currently preparing, in an unprecedented way, as one of the most important sports competitions in the country begins," the ministry said.

The trip "was to observe the preparation of the F1 races in Italy as we put on the final touches at home," Maj Gen al Kitbi said. "We are confident with our ability to host this event with great success. "The event will be our opportunity to demonstrate to the world Abu Dhabi's hospitality and capability to handle such mega functions." [e-mail]
