A Grand Jury handed down indictments this week, formally charging Detone Lewayne Price, 18, and Corey Trevon Perry, 17, with capital murder in the shooting death of Emirati army captain Salem Saif Al Mazrouei.
On August 7, Mr Mazrouei and his father parked in front of their apartment in the Medical Center area of Houston, Texas to unload the car. The elder Mr Mazrouei went up to the apartment. Moments later, his son was allegedly forced through the door by two men.
Mr Perry and Mr Price are alleged to have robbed the father and son in their apartment. The elder Mr Mazrouei fled the apartment during the robbery. His son followed, but was shot as he attempted to escape.
The suspects fled in Mr Mazrouei’s car. The younger Mr Mazrouei was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that night. The car was later found abandoned. Evidence inside the car led police to arrest Mr Price and Mr Perry.
The younger Mr Mazrouei was in the United States to assist his father, who was receiving cancer treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Mr Price remains in jail without bond. His next court date is set for January 4. Mr Perry was granted bond in the amount of $1 million. However, he has not posted bond and remains in jail awaiting trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 7.
Mr Mazrouei, who was 28, leaves behind a wife and an infant son. His body was returned to the United Arab Emirates on August 11. He was laid to rest on August 12 in his hometown of Adhen in Ras Al Khaimah.

US tops drug cost charts
The study of 13 essential drugs showed costs in the United States were about 300 per cent higher than the global average, followed by Germany at 126 per cent and 122 per cent in the UAE.
Thailand, Kenya and Malaysia were rated as nations with the lowest costs, about 90 per cent cheaper.
In the case of insulin, diabetic patients in the US paid five and a half times the global average, while in the UAE the costs are about 50 per cent higher than the median price of branded and generic drugs.
Some of the costliest drugs worldwide include Lipitor for high cholesterol.
The study’s price index placed the US at an exorbitant 2,170 per cent higher for Lipitor than the average global price and the UAE at the eighth spot globally with costs 252 per cent higher.
High blood pressure medication Zestril was also more than 2,680 per cent higher in the US and the UAE price was 187 per cent higher than the global price.
