The paediatric surgery department at Saudi-German Hospital in Dubai has performed a successful procedure to repair a rare congenital defect on a 10-day old infant.
The infant was born with a bladder and reproductive tract disorder, something that occurs only once in every 30,000 births. The surgical team said the patient was referred to by the hospital where he was born.
Several other institutions refused to handle the delicate case. The five-hour surgery included repairing the bladder wall and restoration of the abdominal wall as well as repositioning the reproductive tract to allow it to function normally.
The child is in the intensive care unit and is showing improvement. He will be moved once his condition stabilises.
