SHARJAH // Al Qasimi Hospital’s social services department has offered care to 24 children abandoned or conceived outside of wedlock since 2014.

Naeema Al Nakhee, director, said: “In 2014, we received 13 children, while last year nine children were provided with medical care at the hospital.

“This year, we had twin male children who were conceived outside of wedlock. The Asian mother, who is a resident of Sharjah, tried to sell the babies and was caught.

“Once we receive a child, we clear his entry with the hospital because there are no legal identification papers.”

She said the hospital then ensured the child had a full check-up.

To cover expenses, the social services department reaches out to non-government organisations and donors. “A lot of people help out in these kinds of humanitarian cases,” she said.
