DUBAI // Patients with stomach and digestive disorders will be in line to benefit from a new in-patient unit at Rashid Hospital.

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. The new unit is expected to help the hospital cope with an increase in demand for these specialist services, with the number of beds there trebled.

Doctors there are treating all cases of gastrointestinal bleeding and liver disease, while out-patient services include endoscopy, colonoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy.

Dr Sameer Al Awadhi, head of the digestive diseases unit at Rashid Hospital, said: “The expansion increases the number of in-patient beds to 19, which is important given the high volume of patients the unit receives.

“On a yearly basis, the hospital conducts more than 7,000 gastroenterology procedures, these include in-patient and out-patient procedures.”

Dr Al Awadhi added that the out-patient endoscopy rooms will also be increased from three to five in the near future.
