An 89-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife have recovered from the coronavirus in Dubai, health authorities have said.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), said the couple were treated at Al Kuwait Hospital in the emirate after they tested positive for Covid-19.

The husband suffers from pre-existing health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiomyopathy - underlying conditions which have proved to be fatal in so many cases across the world.

The couple got two consecutive negatives, after which medics declared them free of the virus.

Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and chairman of the National Election Committee, congratulated the pair and their family.

He also thanked medics at the hospital for their efforts in fighting the coronavirus.

“Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the UAE has been proactive and proved its readiness and capability to deal and cope with all crises and emergencies,” said Mr Al Owais.

“From day one, it was very keen to provide highly qualified healthcare workers, advanced medical equipment and sufficient medicines, which shows how the UAE is adopting an exceptional strategy in containing the spread of Covid-19.”

In the UAE, residents over the age of 50 and those with underlying health conditions are tested free for the coronavirus.

The UAE reported 304 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, raising the country's total number of infections to 42,294.
