DUBAI // A building security guard rescued an 80-year-old woman from her flat today after a fire erupted one storey below, her granddaughter said.
Vikram Singh, a security guard at the Art 4 building in the Tecom area, carried Garda Santos on his shoulders, and rushed her out of her fifth-storey apartment after he was alerted to the fire.
No one was injured in the blaze, a Civil Defence official said.
"As soon as the fire alarm sounded, I rushed to the fourth floor to check if anyone was there," Mr Singh said.
"Then I rushed to the fifth floor and saw the woman looking dizzy and I carried her on my shoulders," he said. "I am still in shock over the whole incident. I broke the glass in the apartments and rushed her out."
Mr Singh, who has been working in Dubai for five years, said this was the second fire in the apartment. The first was a minor incident.
Civil Defence was notified of the fire at around 11.35am on the fourth storey. None of the residents was in the flat that was burning.
The fire started outside a balcony of the flat, according to Civil Defence officials. The balcony was being used as a storage place.
The balcony of the flat above it, on the fifth storey, was also slightly burned by the flames, according to Civil Defence.
It took 25 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Civil Defence said.
Ms Santos, who was visiting her daughter and granddaughter from Portugal, was in the apartment by herself when the incident happened.
"My grandmother smelt something burning. She went outside to the balcony to look and saw it was the floor below," said Nicol Ferreira.
"She was carried out by the security guard. She smelt some of the smoke. She was in shock earlier but is better now. We did a brief check on her and she is okay now. She can't speak a word of English and she arrived only four days ago to spend time with us."
Neighbours helped Ms Santos to the lobby, where she was treated.
There are about 128 flats in the 13-storey building, according to Civil Defence officials. The electricity was cut off after the fire began, and residents were evacuated from the building.
"We don't know how this happened," said one resident.
The exact nature of the fire is being investigated.

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

UK's plans to cut net migration

Types of fraud
Phishing: Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.
Smishing: The SMS equivalent of phishing. Fraudsters falsify the telephone number through “text spoofing,” so that it appears to be a genuine text from the bank.
Vishing: The telephone equivalent of phishing and smishing. Fraudsters may pose as bank staff, police or government officials. They may persuade the consumer to transfer money or divulge personal information.
SIM swap: Fraudsters duplicate the SIM of your mobile number without your knowledge or authorisation, allowing them to conduct financial transactions with your bank.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
