UMM AL QUWAIN // Emirati fishermen living in Umm Al Quwain are to be exempted from paying fishing permit fees issued by the department of economic development, Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mualla, Crown Prince of UAQ, has ordered.

The decision aims to alleviate fishermen’s financial burdens and ensure the sustainability of the traditional fishing profession, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the first batch of fish was to be released by the end of 2015 from a new marine research centre under way in the emirate.

The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Centre for Marine Research is expected to help fishermen and encourage the growth of the aquaculture sector.
