BAGHDAD// The UAE’s continuing support for the Iraqi people and their government has been stressed during a meeting between Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Foreign Minister and Iraq’s Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi.
Sheikh Abdullah was in Iraq’s capital to deliver a letter from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, reported Wam.
Bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed with both sides noting a desire to strengthen ties in all fields.
Mr Al-Abadi asked Sheikh Abdullah to convey his regards to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah said the UAE would continue to back the political process in Iraq which would lead to security, justice and equality.
“We stand by brotherly Iraq as it is making efforts for reconstruction and achievement of peace and safety and in combating the forces of terrorism which poses a danger to all the countries of the region and defaces the values of our true religion, Islam,” said Sheikh Abdullah.
Mr Al-Abadi said the threat of terrorism in Iraq and elsewhere in the region required cooperation with other countries and a concerted political and security effort.
“Your coming to Baghdad in these critical circumstances is such a good gesture, and your visit is welcomed and appreciated, especially as Iraq faces existential threat and challenge, which also threaten all the states of the region and requires them all to cooperate in all political, social and security areas in order to defeat terrorism represented by Daesh terrorist gangs.”
Mr Al-Abadi was handed an official invitation to visit the UAE.
