Dozens of young Emiratis were appointed board members of key federal government bodies by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid on Sunday.

The Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai approved the 33 Emiratis for the high-level positions during a UAE Cabinet meeting.

The move followed a Cabinet resolution last year that called for at least one Emirati, no older than 30, to be added to the boards of federal government companies.

The resolution aimed to engage young Emiratis in government work and introduce new perspectives to the boards. An e-portal was also launched for the registration and application.

''Empowering the Emirati youth is at the heart of initiatives and strategies adopted by the UAE Government under the leadership of President Sheikh Khalifa on its journey to the future,'' Sheikh Mohammed said on Sunday.

''We congratulate our sons and daughters who join these boards in the UAE government. We fully support them and their responsibility starts from today.

"The youth are the backbone of the present and makers of the future and the lifelong wealth that should be developed to ensure the competitiveness of the UAE.

"We have confidence in the abilities of our youth to develop services and present constructive ideas for the progress of the nation.'

''Today, we have adopted a policy to engage them in official federal government missions. They are our ambassadors and the engine in our government work."

He instructed the federal government to create the appropriate environment for the young board members to innovate and unleash their potential to modernise government work.

The new appointments will serve a term of between two and three years and are expected to provide creative solutions over national issues to better serve the country and its people.

The Cabinet also approved a policy for the participation of employees under 35 in delegations of official government missions abroad.

The creation of a national council for quality of life, a national council for quality of digital life, and a national committee for folklore were also approved.

Two other committees were formed by the Cabinet on Sunday.

The first is the "2020: Towards the next 50" committee, under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, which will work on the first phase of the UAE Centennial Plan 2071.

The second will prepare for the UAE Golden Jubilee celebrations, under the chairmanship of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation.
