DUBAI // A charity has launched a text message donation system to raise funds to build an orphanage in Dubai.

The Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (Amaf) is building a 16-villa family village in the Al Warqa 3 area that aims to provide a stable environment for orphaned children.

Donations can now be made by Etisalat subscribers by sending a text to 7710 to donate Dh10; 7750 to donate Dh50; and 3100 to donate Dh100.

The system is not yet set up for du customers but it is hoped to be implemented in the near future.

“The initiative comes in line with Amaf’s efforts to provide new e-services that facilitate communication with people and helps them to do good,” said Tayyeb Al Rayess, secretary general of Amaf.

“The family village project will provide real homes and a stable and balanced family atmosphere for orphans with full-time mothers appointed for each group of children. Each home will be an integral unit comprising a mother and siblings. Assistants will function as aunts and they will be part of the children’s daily life. The organisation of the daily system in the village will be handled by a grandmother,” Mr Al Rayess said.

“The new service is an efficient tool that allows us to reach the largest section possible of the community and to speed up and facilitate the donation process,” said Ahmed Abu Shihab, the director of the Awaqf development department.

The village will also feature a medical facility with a residential nurse, a nursery for children under the age of three, a kindergarten and recreational area.

The facility is due to open early next year.
