CAIRO // Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, met with the Egyptian president on Monday during a visit in which he also opened an academic building and a new national archives.
Egypt’s Abdel Fattah El Sisi praised Dr Sheikh Sultan’s role in cultural, literary, art and heritage activities, presenting him with the Order of the Republic, one of Egypt’s highest awards, reported the state news agency Wam.
The meeting was attended by other UAE and Egyptian officials, including Dr Sultan Al Jaber, minister of state.
Dr Al Jaber also signed a protocol for the Egyptian government’s receipt of more than 50,000 social housing units as part of the UAE’s development projects in Egypt.
The housing is aimed at improving services for Egyptians, especially in rural and remote areas. The units will be built in 36 locations in 17 governorates.
Sheikh Sultan earlier opened the new building of the Union of Scientific and Arab Language Academies in 6th of October City, located in Giza governorate.
On Sunday, he opened the new National Archives building in Fustat city, in a ceremony attended by the Egyptian prime minister, Ibrahim Mahlab.
Sheikh Sultan discussed Egypt’s critical role in the region and recalled the Institut d’Egypt fire during the 2011 clashes.
He said that the burning of the scientific and academic centre’s books led him to pledge to rebuild the complex.
