Fujairah Municipality closed down a café for a week and issued fines and warnings to another 34 the past year, noting that it received three complaints over the same period.

Fatima Al Meksah, head of the Public Health Department, said inspections teams were formed to carry out 99 inspection rounds in cafés throughout 2014. Nineteen fines and 15 warnings were issued.

Registered offences ranged from the sale and display of expired food and the absence of required documents in the shop, such as the business licence and the inspections register, in addition to the absence of health cards which prove that staff does not suffer from infectious diseases and the absence of existing or renewed pest control contracts.

Cafes were also cited for using the premises to house their staff.
