ABU DHABI // The Federal National Council has called for emergency talks at the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva to discuss the role of parliaments in the fight against terror.

The seven-member UAE delegation said the fight against terrorism and extremism cannot be limited to one country or region.

They said funding, arming, and training extremists comes from multiple sources requiring “the construction of an international partnership and a global responsibility to combat terrorism”, a statement from the FNC said.

They have asked for full cooperation and coordination between countries, the immediate exchange of information and data and development efforts, and joint actions for the protection of national borders.

The FNC delegation said they found it necessary to ask for the emergency talks as “terrorist organisations pose a risk of passing the state boundaries and posing a threat on countries’ stability, particularly in the Middle East”.

They noted a growing number of women and children have become victims of these terror acts due to intolerance and extremism.

The delegation hope that emergency talks will lead to an international plan.

They added that members of parliaments needed to “spread a culture of cooperation and forgiveness through different civilisations of the world as a basis for peace and security”.

The council said the urgency was prompted by the United Nations resolutions on counter-terrorism, the Security Council resolutions and presidential statements concerning the fight against international terrorism.

The UAE delegation was headed by Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, the first female deputy speaker in the FNC.
