Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed has been the deputy ruler of Dubai since February 2008, when his elder brother Hamdan was made Crown Prince.
The 35-year-old is also the chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated, and the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority (TECOM Investments).
Sheikh Maktoum has personally accompanied the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed on a number of conferences and official visits.
He studied at Rashid Private School in Dubai, and graduated from the American University in Dubai (AUD) in 2005, where he finished a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
He also enrolled in a number of training courses at Harvard University and Dubai School of Government.
Sheikh Maktoum was married on Wednesday to Sheikha Maryam bint Butti Al Maktoum. His brothers Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Ahmed were also wed to royal cousins on the same day.
