NEW YORK // Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi yesterday joined global leaders at the UN’s Sustainable Development Summit in New York, where she was to give a major address overnight.
Sheikha Lubna, Minister of International Cooperation and Development, reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, which include an end to global poverty.
Also the head of the UAE Committee for the Coordination of Humanitarian Foreign Aid, she told the Children and the Sustainable Development Goals forum of the country’s leading role in helping groups in need of health care and humanitarian support, especially women and children.
Those attending included Queen Silvia of Sweden, Graca Machel, widow of South African president Nelson Mandela, and Irina Bokova, director general of the UN’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
The meeting heard of initiatives protecting children from trafficking, sexual abuse, exploitation and drugs.
Sheikha Lubna also discussed progress for the UN’s Every Woman Every Child strategy, which focuses on better quality of care for women, children and adolescents in crisis situations.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.
