DUBAI // Six men allegedly stole jewellery, technology and perfume worth almost half a million dirhams from a home in Dubai.

Prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court that five of the Sri Lankan men, aged between 27 and 48, broke into the villa in Al Qusais on July 9 and stole five Rolex watches, which are worth Dh250,000; jewellery worth Dh90,000; two smartphones and three tablets worth Dh16,000; women’s handbags worth Dh50,000; and five bottles of Oud valued at Dh24,000.

The Egyptian victim, 45, told prosecutors he was out of the country and returned that day to find that his house had been robbed, so he called police.

About a week later police identified two of the suspects and arrested them in Sharjah. During questioning the two men allegedly confessed to the robbery and led police to their accomplices.

“At their apartment in Sharjah we found some items which they said they had stolen from different places,” said a 26-year-old Emirati policeman.

According to prosecutors the five men who carried out the burglary said the sixth defendant had agreed to fly them to the UAE and get them visit visas so they could carry out a number of burglaries for him.

However, in court on Tuesday, the five suspects denied a burglary charge and the sixth man denied aiding and abetting. A verdict is due on December 6.
