DUBAI // Six men armed with swords and an axe attacked a student, mutilating his hand, a court heard yesterday.

“I was at my sister’s house when one of the men arrived carrying an axe and attacked me,” recalled the student, AA. “He hit me on the hand, I tried to escape but I ran into a parked car, lost my balance and fell to the ground.”

A further five men, some armed with swords, then joined in the attack.

“I was hit with the axe twice on my left hand,” the student.

Police arrived and took the student to hospital where he required several operations. The damage was so severe he can no longer grab items with his hand and has only limited ability to make any movement with it.

The student told the Criminal Court that in the months before the attack he had encountered “personal problems” with the man who wielded the axe.

The court charged the Emirati brothers WA, 29, and SA, 21, and MS, 24, and MBS, and their friends MA, 21, also Emirati, and DR, 21, from Pakistan, with assault with deadly weapons.

The case was adjourned to December 12.
