The Social Responsibility Fund launched a campaign yesterday that aims to raise money for new projects by encouraging people to contribute as little as one dirham to help others. The project is called Dirham Wa Bas - One Dirham Only - and donation boxes have been set up across the UAE, in locations including all Emarat petrol stations, major shopping malls and retail stores. "The campaign is one of the initiatives of the Social Responsibility Fund aimed at supporting sections of society which need our help, such as people with limited income, disabilities and the elderly," said Mariam Mohammed Khalfan al Roumi, the Minister of Social Affairs. "Everyone can contribute."

Small contributions, she said, "can add up to make a huge difference. We seek the support of all members of the public across the UAE to make the campaign a success." The campaign intends to bridge the gap between the public and private sector, uniting them to address and solve social and community issues, said Mrs Roumi. The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) will support the campaign with marketing.

"It's a wonderful example of how different arms of society, including the Government and the private sector, can work together to involve the individual in contributing towards social issues in the UAE," said Nasser al Shaali, the DIFC authority's chief executive. "We are committed to contributing to the well-being of the larger society we are part of." Du, the telecommunications company, is also taking part in the initiative.

"We are keen to be part of the campaign as it is our belief in the importance of partnership between private and governmental sectors for the good of society," said Osman Sultan, the firm's chief executive. * WAM
