FUJAIRAH // Residents and visitors gathered on Tuesday to commemorate the 43rd National Day with traditional bullfighting, dancing and even a performance from a German band.

Sultan Malieh, manager of the Fujairah Cultural Centre, said: “Each year we do something special and we welcome people from all nationalities and different ages to celebrate with us, therefore this year we invited a German band that plays great music to perform during our national celebrations.”

The German band, Guccamusik Los Kaachos, made up of 12 musicians, were pleased to be taking part in National Day.

One of the musicians, a drummer called Julian, 27, said: ”We arrived in the UAE a week ago and we performed in Abu Dhabi and Dubai malls and today we are here celebrating National Day with Fujairah residents.”

He added: “Honestly, I was surprised to see people celebrate their national day the way Emiratis do. It is really amazing and gives joy to the heart.

Shaikha Salem, 35, from Fujairah, said: “I enjoyed the variety of the shows here, and my kids loved it too. This is the first time I’ve attended a bullfight, it was thrilling.”

The Corniche came alive with traditional music and rituals, with drummers and yola dancers, while revellers looked their best by wearing brightly coloured national dress.

“I feel proud of my country and what has been accomplished to make us feel united,” said resident Hamad Eid, 26. “The atmosphere is high and makes you dance through the music all day long”.

“I brought my whole family to witness the celebrations, it’s the first time for us and we are really enjoying it. The traditional dances are fantastic. We used to see them dance like this on TV, but to see them live is something magnificent, everybody should experience this,” said Vinod Kumar, from India.

Almost all the buildings, flats and villas were decorated with lights and flags that lit up the city.
