DUBAI // A South African woman who fled to the UAE with her husband returned home last week to find the authorities waiting for her at the airport, a paper there says.

Krishnavelli Mariemuthu and her husband Walter are wanted for allegedly hustling two people out of R700,000 (Dh311,000) in a 2010 real-estate scam, according to the Post in Durban.

Mrs Mariemuthu was returning home for a family reunion, the Post said, but police and immigration officials picked her up after her plane landed at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg last week, following a tip from Interpol.

South African Police believe her husband, who is still in Dubai, sent his wife home to test the waters. He too faces arrest if he returns to the country.

South Africa does not have an extradition treaty with the UAE.
