ABU DHABI // At least four fuel tanker trucks caught fire in the industrial area of Mafraq on Friday morning.

Witnesses who live in area, which houses workers and factories, said the fire started at 9am and the police arrived and had the fire under control soon after, with no resulting injuries.

The charred remains of the vehicles and their cargo, which had “36000 litre Flammable Oil Fuel Tank Danger” written on the side, remained in the area in the afternoon.

An employee of a nearby grocery store said he had to warn workers who are housed adjacent to the area when the fire erupted.

“I woke them up and told them to get out quick because we had no idea what was in those tankers,” said Abdulsalam Abdulhamid, 49.

The Indian said in his 32 years in the UAE he had never seen a fire like it.

Mr Adulhamid said the petrol tankers were regularly parked in the same area without any previous incidents.

The Ministry of Interior’s social media accounts posted photos and video of firefighters battling the flames while black smoke billowed from the vehicles.
