DUBAI// Colleagues of two Indians who drowned while swimming off Jumeirah Open Beach at the weekend have spoken of their shock over the deaths.
C Rijesh 31, a paint mixer, and CP Shinil, 26, an accountant, were swept away by strong currents on Friday while swimming with three workmates from Al Reyami Group.
"They were both excellent boys and hardworking," said P Satish, senior manager at the company. "They were well known in the company and everybody is shocked. This is a great loss to us.
"Many of the staff were at the beach on Saturday waiting for police to find Shinil's body."
Dubai Police said Rijesh died in hospital after being pulled out from the sea. Shinil, however, was swept away by the strong currents. His body was recovered from the beach on Saturday nightd.
Rijesh had worked with the company for six years, while Shinil had been there for four years.
A co-worker said yesterday the men had been swimming for an hour before they got into trouble.
"They were in the water from 5pm on Friday when strong currents suddenly pulled them away," said the colleague, who did not want to be named.
"Their friends managed to pull Rijesh out after half an hour. But he had swallowed too much water. Paramedics gave him first aid. But he died at the hospital."
He said that both men were from the Indian state of Kerala and were strong swimmers.
