ABU DHABI // Civil Defence is investigating a fire that burnt through the ground floor and mezzanine of an unfinished tower block at the corner of 11th Street and Airport Road.
The fire broke out at the site of the 12-storey Bloom Central commercial and residential towers about 1.30am yesterday. No one was injured in the blaze.
It took two hours to control the fire, which continued to smoulder until yesterday afternoon, a municipality official said.
“We haven’t finalised the investigation,” said the health and safety official. “It was maybe caused by an electrical spark or electrical contact but it is now under investigation.”
The final report will be filed within 30 days.
Civil Defence believes the fire spread because of plastic that was incorrectly stored in the basement.
The building suffered smoke and water damage, but firefighters stopped the blaze spreading to the 10th floor and higher.
Capt Abdullah Al Tamimi, head of public relations for Civil Defence, has urged worksite managers to adhere to safety requirements at all times.
A spokesman for Bloom could not be reached. The company website says the project was to include a five-star business hotel, serviced apartments and offices.
No damage was done to surrounding buildings.
