A delegation from the European football champions Barcelona visited the capital's Zayed Sports City Stadium yesterday, three months ahead of Fifa Club World Cup UAE 2009, and said they were impressed by what they saw. The team will play in the UAE for the first time in December, when the tournament begins. The competition pits seven club sides from the six continental confederations. The eventual champions will win US$5 million (Dh18.4m).
"We are really impressed by what we have seen today, both in terms of the playing and training facilities, and the tremendous hospitality shown to us by the people of the UAE," Albert Perrin, a member of FC Barcelona's board, said in a release. "December promises to be an exciting month of football here, and we sincerely hope that the next time we leave the UAE, it will be as Club World Champions."
Mr Perrin, who is responsible for Uefa and Fifa matters, said that since qualifying in May for the tournament, the team had been eager to visit the UAE capital to meet tournament organisers and inspect the pitch. The tournament's eight matches will be split between Zayed Sports City Stadium and Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium. The delegation also toured hotel and training facilities. The visiting group included the club's head of international operations, Stephen Dawson, and travel manager Antoni Moline.
Mohammed Ibrahim al Mahmood, general secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, expressed pleasure at hosting the delegation and showing off "the world-class facilities" being prepared for the competition, which runs from December 9 to 19. "We are looking forward to welcoming the club's players, staff and fans to the region when the tournament kicks off in December," he said. "FC Barcelona enjoys a significant support base here in the UAE, so we know they will feel right at home."

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
- Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
It was founded in 2018 and originally called the Brexit Party.
Many of its members previously belonged to UKIP or the mainstream Conservatives.
After Brexit took place, the party focused on the reformation of British democracy.
Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson became its first MP after defecting in March 2024.
The party gained support from Elon Musk, and had hoped the tech billionaire would make a £100m donation. However, Mr Musk changed his mind and called for Mr Farage to step down as leader in a row involving the US tycoon's support for far-right figurehead Tommy Robinson who is in prison for contempt of court.

- Cecelia Crocker was on board Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 1987 when it crashed in Detroit, killing 154 people, including her parents and brother. The plane had hit a light pole on take off
- George Lamson Jr, from Minnesota, was on a Galaxy Airlines flight that crashed in Reno in 1985, killing 68 people. His entire seat was launched out of the plane
- Bahia Bakari, then 12, survived when a Yemenia Airways flight crashed near the Comoros in 2009, killing 152. She was found clinging to wreckage after floating in the ocean for 13 hours.
