AJMAN // Workers were evacuated from their homes as fire crews tackled a blaze that destroyed six warehouses in an industrial area in the early hours of Monday morning.
Civil defence crews from Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah tackled the fire and were able to bring the flames under control in around 40 minutes, said Col Nasser Al Zari, head of media and public relations department at Ajman Civil Defence.
Worker accommodations near to the scene was evacuated as a precaution, said Col Al Zari, adding that several fire fighters had to be treated for exhaustion.
“We evacuated an entire housing from labourers that is close to the incident scene A number of fire fighters from Ajman civil defence were exhausted due to the high temperatures but they continued their work efficiently.”
No one was injured in the blaze.
Col Al Zari said that an investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire. He urged owners of warehouses to carry out periodic maintenance of fire alarms and to have fire extinguishers on hand to prevent blazes. He also advised companies to ensure the safety of electrical wiring in warehouses, to ban staff from smoking inside and to store goods properly.
