The UAE was battered by heavy rain and strong winds overnight, leaving roads and residential areas waterlogged.

After scattered showers fell late afternoon on Saturday, the downpour lashed parts of the Emirates shortly before midnight accompanied by light thunder.

The National Centre of Meteorology said more is expected in the coming days.

Following the rain in the early hours, standing water built up on roads in Dubai and Abu Dhabi causing hazardous conditions for commuters on Sunday morning, while stretches of water formed on key highways in Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

The northern emirates appeared worst hit as videos were shared on social media by the UAE Storm Centre.

As light thunder echoed across parts of the country, residents posted videos of heavy downpours and rising floodwater.

Authorities warned residents to avoid driving where possible as some emirates experienced serious waterlogging.

“Dear drivers, reduce speed during heavy rain to avoid any hydroplaning,” a tweet from Dubai Police read.

While Abu Dhabi Police warned young motorists to exercise extra caution while driving during wet conditions to avoid the risk of accidents.

The force warned that driving recklessly can result in a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points and a vehicle being impounded for up to 60 days.

According to the weather bureau, the wintry weather will continue for the next few days.

On Sunday, the wind is expected to be moderate with temperatures lowering somewhat. In some exposed areas the wind may possibly kick up a little dust and sand causing low visibility.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are expected to experience humidity levels at the upper limit of 75 per cent.

In Dubai lows of 20°C and highs of 28°C have been predicted. In Abu Dhabi temperatures of 18°C to 22°C should be expected.

In the morning the sea in the Arabian Gulf will be moderate but it will grow rougher as the day wears on. There are predictions of similar but perhaps slightly rougher conditions earlier in the Oman Sea.

Moving into Monday, across the country clouds and rain are expected once again in some areas. with the possibility of a refreshing north-westerly wind. Some dusty patches are also predicted.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
