ABU DHABI // The season for fishing with cast nets has begun for licensed fishermen, says the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
A by-law issued last year specifies that open season for this type of fishing runs from May 15 to October 15, and is limited to licensed fishermen whose boats are registered as cruisers.
“As a core pillar of the UAE Vision 2021, the decision highlights the efforts of the ministry and local authorities to promote food safety, sustainability of domestic production and conservation of the marine environment,” said Salah Al Rayssi, director of sustainability for marine environments.
Exclusion zones include: natural or industrial marine reserves; lakes; areas within three nautical miles of military zones, marine islands, power stations and desalination plants; and within 500 metres of petroleum industry sites shown on charts.
All fishermen should pass through registration and checkpoints to and from fishing trips, inform authorities of where they are fishing and comply with instructions issued.
