DUBAI // Landlords of 11 abandoned buildings have been given a final warning to improve the structures or the municipality will demolish them.
The civic body issued the ultimatum to keep the city clean and safe, it said.
Landlords have to carry out the needed maintenance or demolish the building completely within two weeks from the day of notification.
The order will be applicable to 18 other buildings that are abandoned or neglected in different areas, including Al Baraha, Al Wuheida, Al Quoz 1, Al Quoz 2, Al Jafiliya, Al Muhaisina 2 and four buildings in Hor Al Anz area.
If the parties fail to respond to the order within the specific time period, the municipality will demolish the structures.
Should the municipality be forced to demolish any structure, the cost will be imposed on its owner, in addition to a 20 per cent administration charge.
Dubai Municipality has been keen to take strong action over abandoned buildings in an effort to maintain the aesthetic beauty of the city and ensure public health and safety.
Most of the abandoned buildings serve as a hotbed for insects and other pests that pose a risk to public health.
Building projects that have stalled and are left half-finished and abandoned also pose a threat to the safety of the public.
Such buildings were found to be used by people to conduct unlicensed business, and served as safe havens for antisocial elements.
Building owners can contact the municipality at 800 900 for further information.
